Maternity Leave Recap
Claire is holding Aaron, who is burning up of a fever. She goes to Locke for help and he goes to get Jack from the hatch where he is keeping an eye on Henry Gale.
Claire is cooling off the baby when Rousseau arrives on the beach, asking if Aaron is “infected”. Claire tells her to go away and Rousseau realizes that Claire doesn’t remember her. Claire has several glimpses of a flashback of needles and a voice says, “we don’t want him to get infected.”
Claire gives Jack all the symptoms – a rash, fever, lack of sleep, lack of appetite – and Jack thinks it’s roseola. Claire isn’t convinced and the next morning she asks Libby if she can help her remember what happened when she was captured. She asks Libby to unblock the memories.
Meanwhile at the hatch, Jack and Locke bring Henry some food. Locke gives him a book – Dostoyevsky’s The Brothers Karamazov.
Libby works with Claire to get her relaxed and there are more flashbacks. She is on the island but Claire thinks she’s still in Australia at a checkup. Ethan gives her an exam and a “shot to help the baby”. Claire begs Kate to help her find the room.
Mr. Eko comes into the hatch but Jack hides Henry. Eko is suspicious.
Kate asks Sawyer for a gun. They want to go search for Rousseau and ultimately find some medicine for Aaron.
Claire leaves Aaron with Sun, who chastises Claire for leaving him with her.
* Flashback to the examination room. Ethan injects a huge needle into Claire’s stomach, saying that the baby needs it. He then offers her a surprise. He leads Claire down a hallway to a nursery for the baby. Claire asks Ethan about Charlie and he says that Charlie is fine. She wonders where the baby stuff came from. The mobile on the crib is made of miniature airplanes spinning around a star. A guy shows up at the door and wants to know why Ethan didn’t make the list before taking Claire.
Kate and Claire are trekking through the woods. Rousseau steps out and Claire tells her to lead them to the room.
Eko asks Jack about Henry. Eko wants to speak to him alone but won’t tell Jack why.
In the jungle Kate pulls a gun on Rousseau. She tells Kate to “go ahead. Please do it.” Kate runs after Claire who stops short when she sees a tree branch.
* Flashback to Claire knitting baby booties. Ethan leads a loopy Claire on a walk through the jungle. They come across a large tree branch where they sit for a minute to talk. Ethan gives her something to drink – something sour. He feels the baby kick. Ethan then tells her that he’s going to miss her and wishes that she didn’t have to go. Ethan says that there’s not enough vaccine for she and the baby. He tells her that she has a choice on whether or not they get to take the baby. He also says that they are good people and she needs to be sure in her choice.
Within seconds it’s raining again in the jungle and Claire begins tearing leaves off of a door. The entrance to the medical hatch is revealed. They open the door and peer inside.
They enter the hatch and find flashlights before entering the same hallway, now with flickering lights. Kate disappears in search of power while Claire leads Rousseau through the hall to the nursery. Kate stumbles upon a locker room where she pushes her way through dingy clothing and finds a box of theatrical supplies. Claire finds the baby bootie on the floor.
* Flashback to a woman leaning over Claire, telling her that she needs to leave now. She pushes her into the hall where we see multiple doctors preparing for a procedure. The woman says that they are going to do it tonight, cut her open to take out the baby.
Claire opens a refrigerator that she thinks contained the vaccine. She yells at Rousseau, saying that she knows where it is
* Flashback to Claire lying on the ground in the jungle. She calls out for Ethan but Rousseau appears. She hears someone calling for Ethan. Rousseau tells her to be quiet and covers her mouth. Claire scratches her and Rousseau hits her with the butt of a rifle.
Claire realizes that Rousseau was trying to help her and that she saved her life. She apologizes. Rousseau turns to leave, saying that she didn’t find what she was looking for.
After they leave the medical hatch, Claire asks Rousseau if she had a girl. Rousseau tells her yes, that her name was Alexandra. Claire says that the woman who saved her had blue eyes too, that she wasn’t like the others, and that she was good. Rousseau tells Claire that she hopes the baby is not infected, but that if he is, she hopes Claire knows what must be done. Rousseau then disappears off into the jungle.
Locke is doing dishes in the hatch. Jack and Eko appear and Eko speaks to Henry. They shake hands. Henry looks slightly terrified. Eko tells Henry that he is sorry for killing the two men that grabbed him the first night on the island, and that he is back on the righteous path. He asks Henry for forgiveness and then he pulls out a knife before he trims his beard. It’s slightly nerve-wracking because first you think Eko is going to kill Henry, and then he turns the knife on himself!
Jack tells Claire that Aaron is looking much better and the rash is fading. Claire tells Aaron that they need to take care of each other and she professes her love for him.
Locke opens the door and gives Henry some food and they talk about the virtues of Dostoyevsky. Henry asks Locke if he’s the genius, or the one who lives under the shadow of the genius. Herny provokes Locke, asking him why he takes orders from Jack. Locke leaves and throws the dishes, prompting a brief smile from Henry.

For those who have not read The Brothers Karamotzov, the “prisoner” is Jesus. In a famous chapter called “The Grand Inquisitor” Jesus appears on the street and only the Inquisititor recognizes him. He imprisons Jesus. In one Lost episode the Prisoner makes a comment about being “crucified.” Like the man and woman under water which Kate and Sawyer find swimming (repeated last night), this runs a parrallel with The X Files - in an X files Christmas episode featuring Lily Thomlin and Ed Asner, Scully and Mulder find “Jungian” doubles - representing their astral selves in the “Unconscious.” There is also an X Files episode of “The Grand Inquisitor” written by David Duchovny, in which Jesus an alien prisoner held prisoner by The Cigarette Smoking Man.
