Approaching Lost

Live Together, Die Alone - Recap

by Nikki on May 25th, 2006

We see Jack, Sawyer, and Sayid swimming toward the boat. Everyone else remains on shore, wondering if it’s a trap. Jack climbs aboard, followed by Sayid and Sawyer. Jack cocks his gun. They hear what sounds like opera music coming from underneath. Bullets begin shooting from underneath. They open the door and point their guns at Desmond. He’s drinking alcohol and holding a shotgun.

“You,” he says, looking at Jack.

It’s now nighttime and everyone is talking, wanting to know what’s going on. Jack tells Kate to tell them that Desmond is back, but that is all.

Jack goes to Desmond and wants to know why he came back. Desmond says he sailed for 2.5 weeks, due west, looking for Fiji, but instead he found the island again. He says “this is it, this is all there is left, there is ocean and there is this.” He says they are stuck in a “bloody snowglobe.” He asks if Jack is still pushing the button.

* Flashback to Desmond being released, dishonorably discharged, from service for the queen. He has with him a photograph (Penelope) and a Charles Dickens book. He exits to find a car waiting and he is invited inside. The man (Penelope’s father) provides him with two boxes - one his past, one his future. One contains a box of letters that he sent to Penelope. The other contains money, a buy off for leaving Penelope alone. Her father tells him to run away, that he’s a coward.

Sayid tells Jack that while he goes with Michael across the land, Sayid will travel by the boat. He says he will scope out the place and will signal from the beach (black smoke) so that they can find him. Jack wants to tell the others but Sayid says he needs to keep it a secret so that Michael does not suspect.

Locke enters the hatch to find Eko at the computer. He tells Eko not to push the button, not to be a slave. Eko begins to type in the buttons and Locke attempts to hit the computer. Eko kicks him out and tells him not to come back.

As the others begin to prepare Kate mentions the costumes, wondering if they are indeed who they say they are. Michael jumps in and says that they are hillbillies. They begin their trek down the beach.

Desmond tells Sayid to take the boat but Sayid says he can’t sail.

* Flashback to Desmond in a coffee shop buying a coffee. Libby is in line and offers to pay for the coffee when he doesn’t have any American money. He asks her for 42,000 more as a joke, and they begin a conversation. Desmond wants to sail in a race around the world in a race sponsored by Charles Widmore (Penelope’s father) but he doesn’t have a boat. Libby says that she has a boat. It was her husband’s, but he got sick and passed away about a month ago.

“I want you to have it,” Libby says. When Desmond says “no” Libby tells him that he has to. Her husband’s name was “David” and the boat was named “Elizabeth” after her. Desmond thanks her and says that he will win the race for love.

Back on the beach Sayid is talking to Sun. He wants Jin to sail the boat but Jin says no, he won’t leave Sun. She says she’ll go with them.

The group is walking through the forest when Sawyer reaches for a doll. Kate warned him that it was a trap from Rousseau and explains about being caught in the net. They hear another sound and a huge bird flies overhead. Michael pulls the gun and realizes that his gun wasn’t loaded. Jack apologizes and loads it.

Charlie stumbles on Locke in the forest, in tears (pretty fake tears at that!) Charlie tells him that he should have a drink with his hatch buddy. Locke realizes that it’s Desmond.

Sayid doesn’t want Sun going on the boat, but she insists.

Desmond sees Claire with the vaccines and says that he shot himself every nine days for three years.

* Flashback to Desmond at the stadium. Jack pulls up to start doing his stairs. Penelope pulls up in a car. Desmond asks how she found him. She asks if he read his beloved book while he was away. She asks why he didn’t write. He in turn asks when she’s getting married. She says that they haven’t set a date. He tells her that he’ll be back in a year and she says she wants him back right now. Desmond says he has to do this, has to win the money from him, has to get his honor back - that’s what he’s running to.

Locke and Desmond are talking on the beach. Locke asks how long he pushed the button and Desmond says it was for three years. Locke asks what he would do if he found out it was all for nothing. Locke explains about the Pearl hatch and how the hatch wasn’t real, it was a psychological experiment.

“You’re lying,” Desmond says.

Locke hands him the tape. He then tells Desmond to sober up, get a good night’s sleep, and the next day they’ll find out what happens if they stop pushing the button.

Sawyer pulls out a Dharma nutri-bar and offers it to Hurley, but Hurley’s not hungry. Michael is having some crazy anxiety. Jack appears to help him. Michael thanks him for coming to “help with his boy.” “Live together, die alone,” Jack says.

On the boat Sun is vomiting overboard. They point out something near the land - a huge statue of a foot and ankle. The rest of the statue is missing and the foot only has four toes, something that Sayid finds disturbing!

In the hatch the power flickers off. Eko goes to investigate and hears the countdown. The doors shut.

* Flashback to Desmond sailing in a storm. He ties the wheel and goes below deck. He seals his book in plastic and goes above deck again. Something hits him and he briefly awakes on a beach where a man in a yellow suit drags him across land, Kelvin.

“Are you him,” Kelvin asks. “What did one snowman say to the other?” When Desmond asks what he’s talking about he gets frustrated. The beeping begins and after Kelvin pushes the button Desmond asks what that was about.

“Just saving the world,” Kelvin says. Desmond asks about the suits and he says that he doesn’t want to get infected. He gives Desmond the vaccine and says he hopes it’s not too late.

Eko escapes and runs to Charlie on the beach. He wants the dynamite. He’s certain that in 90 minutes everyone on the island will die.

Kate insists that there are at least two people are following them, across the river. They turn their guns and begin shooting. Sawyer gets one of them. The other one begins running. Kate begins to run after him but Jack says “no”. He says it doesn’t matter, that they’ve already been warned. Jack turns to Michael and tells him to explain.

“Tell them what you’re doing Michael, tell them the truth.” Jack yells as he shoves Michael against a rock. Michael says it was the only way, that they gave him a list.

“You let Henry go?” Kate asks.

“Did you kill them?” Hurley asks.

“I had to,” Michael says. “There was no other way. Libby was a mistake.”

Michael says he’s sorry but it was for his son. Hurley says he’s going back but Jack tells him it’s too late. He apologizes for not saying anything but says that he wouldn’t have done it without having a plan.

Jin hands Sayid the binoculars and they see the rock that Michael described.

Charlie and Eko find the dynamite and go into the hatch. Charlie tries to talk to Locke but Desmond says the doors will hold.

* Flashback to Desmond and Kelvin in the hatch. Kelvin is mixing something and Desmond shorts the computer so that the doors come down. They have something blocking one of them. Kelvin continues painting the invisible map that his partner Rosinsky started. Desmond asks what happened and Kelvin points to the ceiling, says that the brown spot is from Rosinsky shot himself through the head. Kelvin pleas to go outside, says that he’s been cooped up for 2 years. Kelvins says no.

Eko offers Locke one last chance before starting the dynamite. Charlie starts running. The blast pushes all the way up to the entrance - leaving us to believe that Eko is fried.

* Flashback to Desmond punching in the numbers. He finds Kelvin in a crawl space front of a wall with a button that says Caution System Termination.

“I couldn’t do it,” Kelvin says. He says it’s the only other way out, fail safe. “You turn the key and everything goes away.”

Desmond asks what’s behind the wall, what was the incident?

“Electromagnetism,” Kelvins says. “Geologically unique. The incident it was a leak. So now the charge builds up and every time we push the button it discharges it before it gets too big.” Kelvin asks if he has the courage to take his finger off the button.

Desmond wants to open the door to see if Eko and Charlie were hurt but Locke won’t let him.

Sayid scales the rocks and enters one of the huts, then another. He finds nothing. He then goes up to the hatch and opens the door. It’s a decoy - there’s just rocks behind it.

The group finds a huge pile of tubes that contain the field journals and Locke’s map that they sent up the tube from the Pearl hatch.

They see the black smoke in the distance and assume that it is from Sayid. Jack asks Michael where he was taking them, that they are nowhere near the beach. They hear voices and turn their guns. Sawyer gets hit with a dart and falls. Jack yells for everyone to run. Kate gets hit in the shoulder. Jack begins firing into the trees. He then picks up Kate. He gets shot in the leg. They are covered.

Desmond asks Locke for details about the Pearl hatch. After Locke’s description Desmond says that maybe he got it wrong - that maybe the other hatch was the test.

* Flashback to Desmond shaving. Kelvin says good-bye, that he’ll be back in a couple of hours. Desmond notices a tear in Kelvin’s suit but doesn’t say anything. Desmond follows him out of the hatch. Kelvin takes off his mask and walks. Desmond follows him to the beach (very closely, not sure how he wasn’t spotted!) Desmond sees his boat in the water. Kelvin turns on him. Desmond asks what he was doing with the boat and Kelvin says that he was fixing it. Desmond asks about the button and Kelvin says screw the button, he doesn’t even know if it works. Desmond freaks out on Kelvin, saying that Kelvin has ruined his life. They begin to struggle and Desmond accidentally kills him on the rock. He pulls the keys off his neck and runs back to the hatch. A system failure is going on and everything metallic goes flying toward the magnetic wall. Desmond enters the buttons and everything falls.

Desmond is searching through the print-outs of the hatch and asks Locke what day they arrived on the island. Locke says September 22nd. Desmond looks at the print-out and sees that was the day of the system failure. THAT’s how the plane crashed - it was sucked toward the magnet.

“I think I crashed your plane,” he says.

The others lead everyone to a dock, gagged and tied. Michael is free. Tom removes his beard after Kate tells him that she knows it’s fake.

The fishing boat pulls up and Henry Gale appears. He smiles at Jack and says hello. He asks Tom where his beard is. Henry then tells Michael that they should take care of business.

Charlie walks through the trash in the hatch and sees Eko sprawled on the floor.

Desmond tells Locke that they have to push the button, insisting that he crashed their plane. Locke grabs the computer and it breaks on the floor. “You killed us,” Desmond says. “You killed us all.” “No, I saved us all,” Locke says. Desmond shorts the system and the doors open. He finds his Charles Dickens book.

* Flashback to Desmond drinking in the hatch. An envelope falls out of his book. It’s a letter from Penelope that she wrote before he went to prison. She says that she will wait for him always. He begins throwing all the books and records off the shelves in a fit of rage.

“It’s all gone,” he shouts. It’s then that he hears the thumping from above and he turns on the light that Locke saw when he first discovered the hatch.

Desmond finds the key and he climbs into the crawl space. Desmond tells Locke that he’s going to save him. He tells Locke to get as far away as possible. “I’ll see you in another life, brother,” he says.

Charlie and Eko begin to move as knives and forks begin flying through the air. Weights go rolling, darts go flying, soon heavy objects are crashing. Eko tells Charlie to go. Locke is actually frightened. “I was wrong,” he says.

In the space Desmond inserts the key. “I love you Penny,” he says.

On the dock, on the boat, and on the beach there is an incredibly loud noise and a blinding light. Everyone is covering their ears. Everything is shaking. Suddenly it dies down. Something comes flying out of the air and lands on the beach. It says “quarantine”.

Everyone is cleaning up the beach. Charlie comes walking in. Eko and Locke still aren’t back.

On the dock Henry and Michael are walking. He says he’s not happy with the arrangement that was made with Michael but since Michael up to his word, he will live up to his word too. He tells Michael to drive the boat to compass bearing 3-2-5 where they will find rescue. Michael asks about his friends, says he was promised they wouldn’t hurt him. Henry says that a deal is a deal. Michael asks who they are.

“We’re the good guys, Michael,” Henry says.

Henry tells Michael that Walt is inside the boat. “Boy Voyage, Michael,” he says.

Michael hugs Walt and tells him that they are going home.

Hurley is sent back to camp. Ms. Klugh says that his job is to tell the rest of the people that they can never come there. He asks about his friends. “Your friends are coming home with us,” Henry says.

Hurley begins to walk away and Michael and Walt sail away. Kate, Sawyer, and Jack are lifted to their feet. Jack and Kate blink at one another before their heads are covered with canvas bags.

Claire is asking Charlie what happened in the hatch but she doesn’t believe that he doesn’t know. She kisses him.

Somewhere in the snow two men are playing chess and speaking in another language. They see the computer screen it says “electromagnetic anomaly detected”. They begin looking through their paperwork and then pick up a yellow phone. A phone rings and Penelope picks up the phone. “We think we found it,” he says.

So how did Penelope know to look for an electromagnetic anomaly? If her father was in on it, getting Desmond to the island, then doesn’t that mean she was working for him in order to know?
