Episode 03.08 Recap
Desmond asks Hurley and Charlie to come with him. He looks slightly unsettled. The three meet up with Locke and Sayid in the jungle where they learn that Eko is dead. Locke asks Hurley and Charlie to remain calm for the rest of the islanders. Desmond goes into a zone and then bolts out onto the beach. He strips down and begins swimming out to a body at sea. It’s Claire. Desmond does some quick CPR on her while Charlie stands by freaking out. Charlie wants to know how Desmond knew. Hurley’s response? “That guy sees the future, dude.”
Claire approaches Desmond to thank him for saving her. Charlie, ever so jealous, arrives with Aaron to pull her away. Charlie comes up with the ingenious plan of getting Desmond drunk (with some whiskey from Sawyer’s stash) in the hopes of getting the “truth” out of him.
A bottle and several hours later the three are singing and chatting it up. When Charlie finally asks Desmond how he knew Claire was drowning Desmond said he heard her calling for help. Charlie brings up his other “clairvoyant” instances but Desmond walks away. Charlie calms him a coward and Desmond attackks him, saying that he doesn’t want to know what happened.
* Flashback to Desmond in the hatch with the key. He sees a series of images and then he’s lying on the floor in a puddle of blood, er… red paint in an apartment he shares with Penny. He’s utterly confused (not surprisingly) but willing to except this strange turn of events. While dressing for an interview with Penny’s father he hears the same “hatch beeping” sound coming from their microwave. Slightly unsettling.
* Desmond meets with Mr. Widmore, where he learns about the upcoming “race around the world”. When Mr. Widmore offers Demond a job he gives away his ulterior motive - asking for permission to marry Penny. Widmore pulls out a bottle of whiskey… the same one that Desmond later shares on the beach… and drinks a sip in front of Desmond without offering him any. In fact he says that it would be a disgrace because Desmond isn’t worthy of the whiskey, isn’t worthy of his daughter.
* Upon leaving the building who does he stumble on? Charlie singing on the streets for money. Desmond says he knows him from somewhere… and then remembers about the hatch, the island, everything. Desmond goes in search of his physicist friend (Donovan) and asks him about time travel, about going back in time to relive his life. Desmond starts offering predictions on what will happen in the bar, but it doesn’t happen the same as he recalls.
* Desmond returns home to Penny. He asks her why she loves him and Penny responds by saying he’s a good man. He then goes out shopping for a ring. After being shown a ring he says he’ll take it. The saleswoman tells him no. She tells him that he’s not supposed to take it, he’s supposed to have second thoughts, walk out the door, not ask Penny to marry him, and enter the sailing race. She says that if he doesn’t do those things everyone else will die, so he better give her back the key! He asks her who she is and they go on a walk. He thinks she’s his subconscious but she tells him that she’s not… and then goes on to say that the universe has a way of course correcting and that he doesn’t have a choice about going to the island. When he says he’s going to go ask Penny to marry him she says that he may not like his path, but it’s the only truly great thing he’ll ever do (going to the island pushing the button).
* A couple hours later Desmond meets up with Penny and they get their picture taken. Desmond stares at the picture and then proceeds to end it with her. He says that it will never work, he doesn’t have a job, he can’t afford anything. Penny says he’s a coward and after Desmond tells her they’re not supposed to be together she walks off. Plop goes the ring into the river.
* Desmond’s sitting in the bar when he realizes his predictions are coming true. He goes to stop a fight and gets knocked out. He awakes in the jungle, naked, and with the continued ability to predict the future.
Which brings us back to where the episode started. Desmond tells Charlie that when he turned the key his life flashed before his eyes and then he was back on the island. Desmond says that he wasn’t saving Claire, he wasn’t saving her… he was saving Charlie. In his flash he saw Charlie diving into the water after her and drowning. He then says that the reason he built the lightning rod was to save Charlie as well. Desmond repeats the part about course correcting and says that no matter what he does, Charlie is going to die.
I don’t know… this episode didn’t really do it for me. I don’t feel like I learned anything at all, except perhaps some of Desmond’s motivation in reaching the island and the last 2 minutes of the show!
