Stranger in a Strange Land Recap
Kate doesn’t want to leave Jack behind but Sawyer keeps pressing on because “Jack asked them to”.
Tom comes in to move Jack and Jack says that if he’s going to be killed, they might as well do it. Tom says that they’re not going to kill him, and why would he think that? Jack responds that “that’s the kind of people” they are. People who would kidnap children, a pregnant woman, and hang Charlie.
On the way out of his cell they pass Juliet, who is being moved IN to the cell. Guess she’s in trouble with the powers that be.
* Flashback to Jack on the beach trying to put a kite together. Achara looks up and laughs, moves in to help him and soon the kite is flying high.
Jack wants to know why Juliet is in trouble but Tom’s not giving up any information.
Kate and Sawyer are arguing in the boat about the best place to make land. Kate wants to keep going until they find the camp but Sawyer worries about being on the water at night. Once they land Kate resorts to calling him James! Karl’s still pretty out of it, offering unsolicited advice until they start questioning him. Kate asks what they do with all the kids. Karl responds that they give them a better life, “better than yours.” He also divulges that they have backyards.
Juliet is released to examine Ben, whose vitals are low and he has a fever. His stitches are infected. She asks Jack to come check on him but Jack refuses. She says she’s in trouble for killing someone but Jack’s very unsympathetic.
* Flashback to Jack and Achara enjoying some local cuisine. While talking, a man walks over and gives Achara an envelope. He bows and says something in Chinese. She puts the envelope in her purse. “I have a gift,” she says. “Must be one hell of a gift,” Jack replies
A woman (Isabel) arrives at Jack’s cell and invites him to answer a few questions. She leads him into a room with Juliet and Tom. She’s “investigating an incident” and wants him to clear up some inconsistencies. When asked if Juliet told him to kill Ben, Jack said he was lying and trying to create chaos. She asks why he’s lying for Juliet. He doesn’t bother answering and asks to go back to his cage.
* Flashback and Achara is entering Jack’s hut. She quickly strips down and climbs in bed. Jack insinuates that it’s been a month of them being together. He wants to learn more about her.
Jack wakes up in the cage to see Cindy, the stewardess tailie who got “captured”, and a group of other people, including children. They’re all dressed in nice clothes, freshly bathed, and they’re there to “watch” him. Jack’s none too thrilled.
Sawyer and Kate wake up to find Karl gone. Well, not gone, but down the trail sobbing on a log. Sawyer tells him he loves Alex he should go back and get her. Karl says if he gets caught they’ll kill him. Sawyer replies that “at least it will be worth it.”
Alex ventures over to Jack’s cage. She wants to know why he saved Ben’s life, after all this time and what he did to them. Jack says he did it because he said he would. When Alex says that Isabel is planning to execute Juliet, Jack tells Alex to let him out of the cage, that he wants to talk to Ben. He arrives to find Ben lying on the table. Jack tells him he has a serious infection, walks him through the procedure, and tells him that he may never walk again. Oh, and he’ll also need a good doctor to nurse him back to health. In return for his assistance Jack wants Ben to stop Juliet’s proposed execution.
* Flashback and Jack is following Achara. He meanders through a strip club and finds Achara in a tattoo parlor. She says her gift is not a tattoo artist. She says she is able to “see who people are”. Her work is not decoration. It is definition. Jack asks if she sees who he is and she says yes, but she can’t do mark him, it’s against her people. He asks what she sees. “You are a leader, a great man. But this, this makes you lonely, and frightened, and angry.” “Good. Now put it on me. Put it on me!” Jack says. She doesn’t want to, but he sits down. We then see the tattoo begun.
Jack and Alex rush through the jungle to where Juliet is. Alex hands Isabel a note from Jack. It says “Ben has commuted Juliet’s sentence. Execution is off the table. He says the rules don’t apply.” Jack looks down, relieved. “He has, however, ordered her to be marked.” Isabel goes back into the room.
* Flashback to some men coming up on the beach and checking out Jack’s tattoo. They then proceed to pummel him into the ground. They tell him to leave the country. He sees Achara in tears.
Jack is back in the cell when Juliet arrives with a grilled cheese sandwich. He wants to see her mark. On her back is a red brand. Jack is upset, tells her to grab a branch off an aloe plant to rub it on. Juliet asks why he helped her. “He told you he was going to let you go home,” Jack says. He told me the same thing. We’re going to make sure he keeps his word.” Juliet wants to know how they’ll do that. “Together.” Juliet then says that they’ll be leaving the island since his friends know where they are. They’ll be going to what Ben calls home.
Kate is upset that Sawyer let Karl go. That and she’s pissed that Sawyer is making all the decisions. Sawyer wants to know what is up with the two of them. “I’m talking about you and me. I know you did it because you thought I was a dead man, so don’t beat yourself up because the doc’s left behind.”
We see Jack, Isabel, Juliet, and more of the Others on the beach. Isabel tells Jack his tattoo reads “He is one who walks amongst us, but he is not one of us.” Jack helps load Ben onto the boat. Kate and Sawyer walk through the jungle. Karl stares at a fire and looks up at the stars. On her island, Alex looks up at the stars. Back to the boats, Jack looks over at Juliet and they exchange a glance.
