Episode 4.08: Meet Kevin Johnson
Aired: March 20, 2008
Recap
The camera pans in on a room of people … Aaron, Claire, Rousseau, Alex, Karl, Hurley, Ben, Sawyer …
Miles is led into the room by Locke. Miles’ hands are tied in front of him.
“Thank you all for your patience,” Locke says. “I know it’s taken me a few days to figure out our next move, but I didn’t want to do anything until I knew more about our situation. You deserve to know everything that I do. So, no more secrets.
“As you all know, Miles here, and three of his people, came to the island about a week ago. So I brought him up from the boat house to share with us exactly why they are here.”
“We’re here for him,” Miles says, pointing to Ben.
“Uh, we kinda like, knew that forever ago,” Hurley says.
“Alright then, problem solved. How soon do we turn him over?” Sawyer asks.
“We can’t turn him over,” Locke replies.
“And why the hell not?” Sawyer asks.
“Because once they have me, their orders are to kill everyone else on the island,” Ben says.
Sawyer looks at Miles. Miles looks down.
“Wait, so, what, he’s one of us now?” Claire asks. “You’re going to protect him? He tried to kill you John.”
“Yeah, and he won’t even tell us who his spy on the boat is,” Hurley says.
“It’s Michael,” Ben says.
What?” Hurley says.
“My spy on the freighter is Michael.”
“I’m sorry,” Sawyer says. “You mean the same guy who killed two women in cold blood and set this little bastard free?” He indicates Ben. “And then sold all of us out so that he could get off the island, that Michael?”
“Yes, James,” Locke says. “That Michael.”
On the Freighter:
Sayid and Desmond are asleep. An alarm sounds. They look up and jump up from their cots and exit the door.
“The rules of desertion still apply to everyone,” Captain Gault yells as he punches someone. “Nobody leaves this ship without my say so.”
“I’m not beating these men to say. I beat them to save your lives. Do you remember to the last two men that took off in this boat. Do you remember what happened to Minkowski? As soon as we get the engines fixed we’re back on the hunt. In the meantime, everyone just hold on.
“Johnson,” he yells.
“Yes sir,” Michael says as he walks forward.
“Clean this mess up,” Gault says.
“Sir,” Michael says.
Sayid walks up to Michael. “Hello, Michael.”
“Not now, man,” Michael says.
“Yes now,” Sayid says. “What are you doing on this boat?”
“I’m here to die,” Michael says and walks away.
On the Island:
Locke walks Miles outside Ben’s house. Sawyer runs up to them.
“Hey,” Sawyer says, “that was a nice meeting, John, but I thought there wasn’t going to be any more secrets.”
“What are you talking about?” John replies.
“I’m talking about the 3 million bucks your buddy, here, asked for. Well?” Sawyer says.
“Yeah, Miles offered his loyalty in exchange for the money, but as I haven’t yet seen a bank on the island, I didn’t think it worth mentioning.”
Miles laughs.
Sawyer says, “Something funny?”
Miles says, “Linus will find a way to get it.”
“And how will he do that?”.
“He wants to survive. And considering that last weekend you had a gun to his head and now he’s eating pound cake, I’d say he’s a guy that gets what he wants.”
In the House:
Ben watches Alex and Karl. They start to leave but Ben stops them.
“Alex, may I have a word with you?”
“I think,” Rousseau says, “we’ve heard enough from you for one night.”
“I’m sorry. You’re just going to have to listen to a little more,” Ben says.
“It’s okay,” Alex says. “What do you want?”
Ben stands up and gives her a piece of paper. “This is a map to a temple. It’s a sanctuary. It may be the last safe place on this island.
Karl asks why they don’t know about this.
Ben says, “Well, it wouldn’t be a sanctuary if I told everyone about it, would it? The rest of our people are already there. If you leave now you can get there in a day and a half.”
“If it’s safe, why don’t we all go?” Karl asks. “Hurley, Claire, the baby.”
“Because the temple’s not for them, Karl, it’s only for us. These people that are coming, they know who I am, Alex. They’re here to capture me, they’ll kill anybody that gets in their way. If they knew who you were, that you were my daughter, they would use you to get to me. We don’t have much time.”
Karl thinks he is right. Rousseau agrees and says they should go.
“These people,” Alex says, “you said they’re dangerous. More dangerous than you?”
“Yes,” Ben says. “But your mother will protect you. Okay, now go.”
They all walk out.
On the Freighter:
Sayid and Desmond search for Michael and discover that he’s in the engine room. They walk in.
“Can I help you?” Michael says.
“The captain sent us down to help with the repairs,” Sayid says.
“Oh, thanks,” Michael says. “We’re okay.”
Michael asks the man he’s working with to get a pressure valve and the man leaves.
“You shouldn’t be here!” Michael says. Sayid grabs him and throws him against a wall.
“Hey, Sayid,” Desmond says, “what are you doing?”
“Why are you here?” Sayid asks.
“If they see me talking to you-” Michael says.
Sayid tells him to explain quickly. “You just start from the beginning and explain how you came to be on this boat.”
Flashback – Car Crash:
Michael sits in a rundown apartment writing in a notepad. He looks at a picture of himself and baby Walt. He then goes out to his car, pins the note to his shirt and speeds off. He drives recklessly and smashes into a large dumpster.
He comes to in a hospital with a neck brace. He looks over at a guy sleeping in the next bed over. A nurse walks in with blankets and says, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to wake you, Mr. Dawson.”
Michael asks what happened to him.
“You were in a car accident. It’s a miracle you’re alive.”
“How badly was I hurt?” He looks at the nurse. It’s Libby!
“It’s a cold night,” she says, “I brought you some extra blankets.”
Michael screams and opens his eyes. He’s in the same hospital, next to the same sleeping man, but Libby is gone. A different nurse walks in. She says, “The EMTs say they found you in a wrecked car with a note pinned to your chest. You didn’t have any ID on you. You want to tell me your name?”
Michael doesn’t answer.
“Yeah, I didn’t think so. You want me to call Walt?”
He looks at her. “What?”
“The note pinned to your chest, it was written to Walt. You want me to call him?”
“No.”
“Okay, then.” She walks out.
Flashback - In Search of Walt:
At a later time, Michael walks up to a house and knocks on the door. A woman answers and Michael calls her ma and asks to come in.
She steps out and closes the door. “No. You know the answer to that.”
Michael says he wants to talk to Walt but she says no.
“I don’t know what you said to that boy, but whatever it was, he doesn’t want to see you.”
“Please, Ma, he’s my son. I have a right-”
“I thought you were dead. They said your plane crashed in the middle of the ocean, but you show up here fine and dandy. Only, I can’t tell anybody about you or Walt. Can’t call you by your real names. He barely talks to me. But he does wake up screaming in the middle of the night and I’m the one that’s got to tell him that it’s going to be okay. So, until you can explain to me, where you were for over two months and what happened, you gave up your rights!”
Michael says, “Will you tell him I love him?”
She nods and Michael walks away. He sees Walt looking from the window but Walt walks away as soon as he turns.
Flashback – Pawn Shop:
Michael goes to a pawn shop to sell the watch Jin gave him. The man offers him $300 but Michael only wants a gun and bullets.
Michael walks into an alleyway and loads the gun.
He holds the gun to his chin. Someone walks up, “Excuse me sir, you got the time?”
“No,” Michael says, hiding the gun.
“Come on, Michael,” the man says as he walks closer, “how about for an old friend?”
It’s Tom.
Michael stands and tries to shoot Tom, but Tom moves Michael’s arm. “Will you just relax! I just came here to-”
Michael punches Tom and they scuffle. Tom finally gets the gun and says, “That’s enough.”
“Do it,” Michael says, and pulls the gun to his forehead.
“You’d like that, wouldn’t you?”
Michael asks how they found him.
“We’re the ones who sent you home, Michael. Did you honestly think we weren’t going to keep tabs?”
Tom says they need his help.
“Why would I help the son-of-a-bitch who kidnapped my son?”
“We gave him back to you in one piece, Mike. You’re the one who lost him.” Tom pauses. “You told him, didn’t you? You couldn’t carry the guilt to what you did to those two women all by yourself, so you shared it with a ten year old kid! Is that why you want to kill yourself, Michael? Because that’s the way he looks at you now? Because he knows you’re a murderer?”
Michael tells him to go away.
“I’ve got bad news for you, Amigo, you can’t kill yourself. The island won’t let you.”
“What’d you say?” Michael asks.
“No matter how bad you want to, no matter how many different ways you try, it won’t happen.” He hands Michael his gun. “Give it a shot if you don’t believe me. You’ve got more work to do, Mike. When you figure that out, I’m in the penthouse at the Hotel Earl.” He walks away.
Flashback – Flight 815:
Michael goes back to his apartment. He sits on the couch with the TV on. He tries to shoot himself in the head but nothing happens. He checks to see that the chamber is fully loaded. He tries again, but nothing happens.
On the television a newsflash says that the wreckage of Flight 815 has been found. Michael watches as the anchor woman says, “This footage confirms the airplane did in fact crash at sea. At these tremendous depths there is little hope of uncovering any remains. Investigators are equally skeptical about the chances of retrieving Oceanic 815s black box. The real story behind what happened to this fateful airliner may have been lost along with the 324 passengers on board.”
Flashback – A Job:
Michael goes to Tom’s hotel and Tom says he wasn’t expecting him here that fast.
A man asks Tom, “Is this the guy who hit you with the champagne bottle?”
“Yeah, but I had it coming.” He laughs. “Arturo, Michael and I have some business that we have to attend to. You get some air.”
“Of course,” Arturo says. He kisses Tom on the cheek. “Ciao.”
Michael says that he wants to know what his plane is doing at the bottom of the ocean.
Tom laughs. “That’s not your plane. It’s a phony. A man named Widmore put it down there and he staged the whole thing.”
“He doesn’t want anyone else finding where the real plane ended up, except for him.”
Michael doesn’t believe it. Tom asks if the bullet bounced or if the gun jammed up on him. Michael ignores him and tells Tom to prove it.
Tom throws a file to Michael. Michael takes out a picture of dug up graves. Tom says, “That’s the cemetery in Thailand where Widmore dug up the 300-odd corpses he needed. And the purchase order for the old 777 that he bought from a shell company. And the shipping logs for the freighter he used to drop the whole mess down a trench deep enough to guarantee that no remains are ever going to be identified. Do you have any idea what it would cost to bring those bodies up?”
“What do you want from me, man?” Michael asks.
“In a few days, a freighter is porting in Fiji. It’s Widmore’s boat. We have reason to believe he’s finally found the coordinates of the island, and he’s heading right for it. So congratulations, Michael, your shore leave is over. You just got a job on that boat.” He holds up a passport. “Meet Kevin Johnson. You’re joining the crew in Fiji as a deck hand.”
Michael looks at the passport with his picture on it. “You want me to go undercover?”
Tom nods.
Michael asks why he should work for them.
“Because if Widmore finds the island, it’s good night for everybody on it. He’ll kill them all without thinking twice. You want to redeem yourself for what you did? This is your only chance. You can save all their lives.”
“No.” Michael throws the passport down and says he can’t go back to the island.
“I didn’t say you were going back to the island. You’re not going on that boat so you can swab decks, Michael. You’re going so you can kill everyone on board.”
Flashback - Fiji:
Michael gets out of a cab in Fiji and walks towards the freighter.
“Hey,” Minkowski says to him, “you our engineer?”
“Nah, just a deck hand.”
Minkowski introduce himself and tells Michael to check in with Naomi.
Michael walks over and Naomi verifies he’s on the list. “I’ll see you on board. Oh, uh, one of these crates was delivered for you.” She points to a large crate that says Kevin Johnson on it. “I’ll have it delivered to your birth?”
“Yeah, thanks.”
“Welcome aboard, Kevin.”
He walks onto the boat and Miles is sitting there. “Your name isn’t Kevin,” Miles says. He smiles. “Don’t worry, 80 percent of the people on this boat are lying about something.”
Michael’s phone rings. He answers and Tom says, “How was your trip? I figure flying can’t be too much fun for you.”
Tom tells Michael to wait a day or two until they are out in open sea and then he’s good to go. Michael doesn’t respond
Tom says, “Oh, you’ve met some of them now. Got some names and faces and you’re getting cold feet, huh?”
“Yeah, actually I am.”
“Well, here are a few more names for you: Sun, Sawyer, Jack, Claire, her baby. And the only way you’re going to save their lives is if you man up and get on that boat. Or maybe you want to come back and explain to your kid how you let all of them die too. It’s game time. Are you in or out?”
Michael thinks for a moment. “I’m in.”
“Good. Ditch your phone and go do your job.”
Michael throws his phone into the water.
Flashback - Pilots:
Michael hears Naomi and Lapidus arguing.
Naomi says, “Sorry, Frank, I’m going first and that’s all there is to it.”
“No offence,” Frank says, “but I was flying these things when you were still in grade school. If anyone’s got to go first, it should be me.”
“Yeah, I need you here to transport the science team, Frank.”
“What the hell are you going to be doing?”
“That’s need to know. You don’t.” She walks away.
Frank walks over to Michael and introduces himself. He chats about Oceanic Flight 815.
“What would you say if I told you the plane they found in that trench wasn’t Oceanic 815?”
“What is it?” Michael asks.
“You know those nuts who think the moon landing was fake? Well this is like that, only real. That’s why I signed up for this trip, because the owner of this boat believes me. Charles Widmore. He believes that 815 is still out there somewhere. I mean, can you imagine what would happen if we found some of those people alive?”
Flashback – The Button:
Michael catches Keamy shooting clay pigeons on deck.
“I thought we were going on a rescue mission,” Michael says but they all laugh.
Michael goes to his crate and pulls out a case. He goes to push the button but he hears a voice say, “Don’t do it, Michael.” He turns to see Libby and then she is gone. Michael pushes the button.
A timer counts down. “I love you, Walt.” Michael closes his eyes. When the timer gets to zero, a flag pops up with a note. It says “Not Yet”
Flashback – Walt:
Minkowski comes into Michael’s room and says he has a call, from Walt.
Michael goes to the radio room and asks if he can take it alone.
Michael puts the headset on and says, “Walt?”
Ben says, “I’m so sorry, Michael, but he’s still in New York. So, I’m afraid you’re stuck with me … Michael, are you still there?”
“You put me on this boat, talked me into blowing it up, and when I pushed the damn button, a flag pops up.”
“You actually activated the bomb?”
“It’s not a bomb, it’s a joke!”
“There are people on your boat who are innocent. They have no idea that the man they work for is a monster, a killer without conscience or a greater purpose. I had to show you the difference between him and me. When I’m at war, I’ll do what I need to do to win, but I will not kill innocent people.”
“Ana-Lucia and Libby? They were innocent.” Michael says.
“You killed them, Michael. No one asked you to. I don’t blame you, Michael. We did have your boy. What wouldn’t a man do for his son?”
“What do you want from me?”
“I want you to compile a list of names, every person on your boat. When I call again, you will give me that list. Then you will disable the radio room you’re sitting in. When the crew is disoriented from lack of communications, you’ll take out their engines too. That way the boat can never get to this island and your friends will be safe. Will you do that for me, Michael?”
Michael says he will.
“Then consider yourself one of the good guys.”
Michael removes the headset and cries.
On the Freighter:
Sayid and Desmond are staring at Michael. “So you’re telling me,” Sayid says, “that you’re working for Benjamin Linus.”
When Michael agrees, Sayid grabs Michael and drags him to the captain.
“This man is not who you think he is. He was a passenger on Flight 815. I spent two months with him on the island before he betrayed us. This is the man who sabotaged your radio room and who destroyed the ship’s engine. And his name isn’t Kevin Johnson. It’s Michael Dawson. And he’s a traitor.”
On the Island:
Rousseau, Karl, and Alex travel through the jungle.
They stop and sit down. Alex asks Karl what is wrong and he says he has a bad feeling.
They hear a noise and Karl’s water bullet starts leaking from a round hole. Another bullet hits Karl in the chest.
Rousseau calls to Alex and pulls her away from Karl. Alex is crying and wants to get Karl but Rousseau says that he’s gone. She says to take her hand and on three they will run. “Can you do that? I love you. I love you very much, Alexandra.” Rousseau counts to three and stands to run. She is shot and falls down.
Alex stands and puts her hands up. “Wait, wait, don’t! I’m Ben’s daughter! I’m his daughter!”

For some reason I feel that none of them can really die off the island until everyone is either rescued or until some sort of timeloop is fixed. I only believe this because besided Michael trying to kill himself, Jack tried as well when he was about to jump off the bridge. He was suddenly interupted by a car crash and a woman that needs his expertise in a strange way.
