Character Profile
Ben Linus

Actor: Michael Emerson

On the Island: Ben was brought to the island as a child when his father came to work for Dharma.

Profession: Dharma employee. Later Ben was the leader of the Others

Prior to the Crash:

Ben was born prematurely while his father and mother were hiking in a forest in Oregon. His mother died during labor and her last words were to name the child, “Benjamin.”

Ben came to the island as a boy when his father, Roger, got a job working for Dharma. Ben’s father was an alcoholic who paid hardly any attention to Ben while he was a child, often forgetting his birthday.

Ben saw the Hostiles attack Dharma and that night he saw his mother outside.

Ben met another child, Annie, on the island. Annie became his friend and gave him a birthday present, a doll carved to be her. She also carved a doll to represent Ben. She kept the Ben doll and Ben kept the Annie doll. That night Ben wet home where his father was passed out on the couch. Roger woke and began saying that Ben killed his mother on his birthday. Ben ran off to the fence. His mother was there again but she told him it was not time yet.

Later Ben ran away from home and met Richard Alpert. After Ben said he wanted to join the Hostiles, Richard told him that it might be possible, but he had to be patient.

Years later, as an adult, Ben killed his father on his birthday. The Hostiles had killed the Dharma staff in the Purge.

With the Others
At some time Ben became leader of the Others. The Others were a combination of Hostiles, Dharma staff who had deserted the initiative, and people from the outside world who had been recruited to come to the island. Ben also adopted Alex and was very protective of her. He did not approve of her relationship with Karl and resorted to brainwashing and eventually having him killed.

Ben had Juliet brought to the island to help solve the pregnancy problems on the island. She was not successful but he convinced her to stay on by promising that Jacob would heal her sister’s cancer. Ben began having feelings for Juliet and was jealous of her affair with Goodwin.

Shortly before the crash of Flight 815, Ben had pain in his back. Juliet took x-rays and discovered a tumor on his spine.

After the Crash:
Ben immediately directed the Others after the crash of Oceanic Flight 815. He sent Goodwin off to keep him away from Juliet.

At a later point Ben posed as Henry Gale to infiltrate the Losties’ camp. Danielle shot him and the Losties captured him. Sayid discovered that he was not Henry Gale after the visited the supposed gravesite and found documentation on the dead body there.

Michael killed Ana Lucia and Libby before freeing Ben. This was all so that Michael could get to Walt.

Back at the Others’ camp, Ben resumed his leadership, directing Kate, Sawyer, and Jack to their respective prisons. Jack soon discovered the x-rays of Ben’s back and asked Ben if he wanted him to save his life. Jack initially refused to the surgery but finally agreed when Ben said he would help him get off the island. During surgery Jack purposely slit Ben’s kidney sack. He told Juliet and Tom that Ben would bleed to death unless they released Kate and Sawyer. They did and Jack repaired Ben’s kidney.

Later, after he had healed, Ben and the Others deserted their barracks. Locke attempted to join them, but Ben led Locke to the gravesite of the Dharma crew and shot him.

When Ben learned that the Losties had infiltrated the Looking Glass and were headed to the radio tower. Ben went to the radio tower to stop them but was taken prisoner. When the Losties split into two groups, Locke took Ben as his prisoner. The Freighter people arrived and Locke discovered that they were after Ben.

Ben then made a deal with Locke. He said that Widmore was in charge of the freighter and wanted to exploit the island. He then said that he would tell Locke his person on the boat, in exchange for limited freedom. He said that Michael was his guy. He also revealed that he must be protected because the Freighter peoples’ orders were to kill everyone else on the Island after they captured Ben.

Off the Island:
At some point, Ben leaves the island and recruits Sayid as his hitman. He tells Sayid that the people he is being sent to kill were not good people and that Sayid’s “friends” would be in danger if these people were left alive.
