Camp Jack:
Jack is asleep…

“Jack,” Juliet says as she walks into the room. “Jack. Jack.”

She slowly comes into focus.

“Jack, I need you to wake up. Jack. Can you hear me. You okay?”

“What happened?” he asks.

“Come on, I just want to know why,” we hear Bernard. “I want the truth!”

“I don’t know, that is the truth. I’m telling you. I don’t know why, but there’s no signal now,” Daniel says.

“Signal, there was a signal when you called them last night. So so, what? They’re just ignoring us?” Bernard continues.

“How are we supposed to know why they’re not answering. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re not on the bloody boat, are we?”

“Hey, just watch your tone Red,” Rose says.

“Hey, everyone just needs to calm down, okay,” Jack says as he steps up.

“Jack, these people are lying to us,” Bernard replies.

“I know they are lying,” Jack says.. I know it. Sooner or later their people will come back for them. And when they do, we’ll be waiting for them.”

“Unless they run off again,” Sun replies.

“Listen to me,” Jack says.

“Jack, are you all right?” Rose asks.

“I’m fine. We just have to be patient okay. I’ve gotten us this far. I said I was going to get us off the island. All of us. I promised I would.” Jack collapses.

“Jack.”

“Jack.”

Flash Forward:
Jack is asleep in a bed. The phone rings, waking him up. He answers the phone and looks at his watch.

“Dr. Shephard,” a woman says, “just confirming your eleven o’clock consult.”

Jack puts his watch down.

“It was moved up yesterday and I know how you are with your calendar,” she continues.

“Yeah, yeah, I remember, Jane. I’ll, um, I’ll be in there.”

Jack gets out of bed and wraps a towel around his waist. He picks up a woman’s panties from the floor before walking into the kitchen. He steps on a toy. He takes two wine glasses and puts them in the sink before making coffee.

He picks up the paper that reads, “Yankees bludgeon Red Sox in series sweep.”

Jack goes into the bathroom. A woman is taking a shower. He says, “Good morning.”

“Good morning, yourself. I bought you a razor.”

“What? You don’t like the scruff?”

“Razor’s by the sink, Jack”

He opens the door. Kate steps out. They kiss.

Later Jack reads to Aaron as he lays in his bed. He looks up to see Kate watching from the doorway. He continues reading before looking down and seeing Aaron is asleep. He puts the book away and turns off the light.

Kate closes the door after him.

“You’re a natural,” she says.

“Yeah?”

“Yeah.”

“My old man used to read me that story.”

“Really?” Kate smiles.

“What?”

“It’s just sweet hearing you say nice things about your dad.”

“I don’t say nice things about my dad?”

Kate shakes her head.

“Well, he was a good storyteller, I’ll give him that. Hey, you okay?” He rubs her arms.

“Yeah. It’s just, I love seeing you with him. I’m so glad you changed your mind. I’m so glad that you’re here.”

“Me too.” He kisses her.

Camp Jack:
Juliet helps Jack lean against a tree and goes to get water. Jin asks if he’s okay.

He says he’s fine. Kate runs over and asks Bernard what happens

“You fainted?” she asks Jack.

“I’m just a little dehydrated.”

She feels his face. “

Jack, you’re not okay. You’re burning up.”

“I’m fine. I just need to get a little rest.”

He walks off.

Camp Sawyer:
Sawyer, Miles, and Claire walk through the jungle. Claire stumbles and Sawyer asks if she’s okay. She says she is woozy.

Sawyer asks how her head is and she says she has a bit of a headache. “But at least I’m not seeing things anymore.”

“Yeah?” Miles says, “What’d you see?”

“Back off, Donger,” Sawyer steps in.

“I’m just making conversation,” he says.

“Let’s make some time. I want to cover more ground before we got to camp tonight. If we hoof it, we can make it to the beach by noon tomorrow.”

Miles stops. He hears screaming and crying.

“Who’s Danielle and Karl?” Miles asks.

“You mean Rousseau? The French woman?” Claire asks.

Miles starts to dig. He digs out Rousseau’s face. “Is this your French woman?”

He digs out Karl’s face.

“Karl,” Sawyer says. “How’d you know they were down there? Your buddies do this?”

“They’re not my buddies, man. I didn’t sign up for this.”

“Can we just get out of here, please?” Claire says. “Can we just go?”

“Yeah, yeah, of course,” Sawyer says. “But don’t worry. Once we get back to the beach, everything’s going to be fine. All right?”

Camp Jack:
Jack takes some pills as Juliet walks in. He says he thinks he has food poisoning.

“I’ve got some cramping, dehydrated, nausea.”

“I respectfully disagree,” Juliet says.

“Do you?”

“You want to lift your shirt up? If it’s food poisoning, you’ve got nothing to worry about.”

Juliet pushes on his side and he winces. She says it’s his appendix.

“Has it ruptured?”

“Not yet.”

“Well, I guess we’re just going to have to take it out.”

Juliet goes outside and puts together a list.

“Do you remember where the medical station is?” Juliet asks Sun as they are walking.

“Yes, I remember,” Sun says.

“These are the instruments I need you to bring back. You can find them in drawers in the exam room.”

“Clamps, sutures, Juliet I don’t know what these look like,” Sun says.

“I can,” Daniel replies, walking up. “I’m familiar with surgical instruments.”

“I thought you were a physicist,” Juliet says.

“Yeah, well, I’ve done some animal autopsies too…”

“No,” Jin interrupts.

“We can’t trust them,” Sun says as Charlotte sighs.

“See Dan, I told you. They’re conviced we’re trying to kill ‘em,” Charlotte says. “Mine as well keep playing the part.”

“Yeah well, Charlotte, that right there. That, your attitude, your very bad attitude, is exactly why they don’t trust us. Come on, Juliet, please. Don’t blame us for this, for whatever is happening. We’re scientists, we don’t want anyone to get hurt, we just want to help.”

Juliet hands Daniel the sheet of paper with the list. She then hands Jin a gun.

“Anyone tries to run, shoot them in the leg,” Juliet says.

Jin takes the gun and Juliet says, “Get back here as fast as you can.”

“Okay,” Sun says.

“Thank you,” Daniel says.

Juliet turns and tells everyone. “We need to create a sterile environment. Find a hard surface, wash it down, gather as many tarps as you can.”

Kate asks why they don’t move Jack to the medical station.

“Because if we move him, there’s a good chance that his appendix will rupture. And if that happens, he’s going to die.” She walks away.

Camp Sawyer:
Miles is checking out Claire and Aaron.

“Don’t even think about it,” Sawyer says.

“What?”

“Don’t look at her. Don’t talk to her. Don’t mess with her. You got a restraining order, 20 feet.”

“What are you? Her big brother?”

“No. I’m the guy who’s going to put a boot in your face unless you say, ‘Yeah, I get you.’“

“Yeah, I get you.” Miles shakes his head.

Camp Jack:
Rose brings over a bucket of water and starts to wash a board with a rag. Bernard notices she is upset and says that Jack is going to be okay.

“That’s not what I was thinking. I was thinking, why did he get sick?”

Bernard says it’s bad luck.

“The day before we’re supposed to be rescued the person that we rely on the most suddenly comes down with a life threatening condition and you chalk it up to bad luck?”

“Well what are you saying? That Jack did something to offend the Gods? People get sick, Rose.”

“Not here,” she says. “Here they get better.”

Inside the tent Juliet shaves Jack’s stomach.

“When was the last time you did this?” Jack says.

An appendectomy or shaving a man’s stomach?” Juliet asks. Jack laughs.

“In my residency. I did a lot of them back then,” Juliet says.

“Then you know the incision needs to be two inches lower than where you’re shaving.”

“I’m just cleaning the area. Thank you.”

“I want to talk you through it. I don’t want to be unconscious. We can use the Lidocaine to numb the area and then I can watch the procedure and help you out.”

“And how are you going to watch when you’re flat on your back with my hand in your abdominal cavity?”

“We can use a mirror and Kate can hold it,” Jack says.

“If someone is going to be in there, shouldn’t it be someone with medical experience and not someone…”

“No. I want it to be Kate.”

“Okay.”

Flash Forward:
Jack walks in the hospital and tells a woman she is in good hands. He turns and see his father walk by.

The receptionist says, “Dr. Shephard, there’s a call for you. It’s a Doctor Stillman from Santa Rosa hospital. Says it’s about a friend of yours.”

Later Jack walks down the hallway of Santa Rosa with Dr. Stillman.

“He’s refusing to take his meds and he’s stopped sleeping.”

“What about his therapy sessions?” Jack asks.

“Therapy’s been rendered useless.”

“And why’s that?”

“Because he doesn’t think I exist.”

Jack goes into Hurley’s room. He asks why he isn’t taking his medication.

“Because we’re dead. All of us. All the Oceanic Six, we’re all dead. We never got off that island.”

“Hurley, that is not true.”

“What’d you do today?”

“What did I do today? I woke up, I took a shower, Kate and I fed the baby.”

“I thought you didn’t want anything to do with Aaron.”

“I changed my mind after the trial.”

“Living with Kate,” Hurley says. Taking care of Aaron. It all seems so perfect. Just like Heaven.”

“Just because I’m happy doesn’t mean that this isn’t real,” Jack replies.

“I was happy too, Jack, for awhile anyway. Then I saw Charlie. He likes to sit with me on the bench out on the front lawn. Pretty cool, actually.”

“Okay, so what do you two talk about?”

“Well yesterday he told me that you were going to be coming by. He wanted me to give you a message.”

“A message?”

Hurley gives Jack a piece of paper. “He made me write it down so I wouldn’t mess it up.”

Hurley reads the paper. “You’re not supposed to raise him, Jack.”

Jack gets up.

“Does that make any sense?” Hurley asks.

“No, that doesn’t make any sense.”

“You think he means Aaron?”

“Take your meds, Hurley. Just take them.” Jack opens the door.

“Hey, Jack,” Hurley says, “Charlie said someone was going to be visiting you too. Soon.”

The Medical Station:
Sun, Jin, Charlotte, and Daniel arrive at the station.

Daniel says to Charlotte, “Why don’t you let me go first. You know, to make sure everything is safe.”

“Okay. Be careful, Dan.”

Daniel goes first.

Jin talks to Sun in Korean.

“Do you think she knows he likes her?” Jin says.

“She’s a woman,” Sun says. “She knows.”

Charlotte smiles.

Inside the station Sun touches the exam chair. Jin asks if she’s alright.

In Korean she says, “This is where Juliet brought me. This is where I saw our baby.” She looks at Charlotte and Daniel. “They’re not going to help us, Jin.”

Charlotte looks over.

Jin says, “Don’t worry about them. I promise you, Sun, I will get you and our baby off this island.”

Camp Sawyer:
Miles, Saywer, and Claire walk through the jungle.

“You want a hand with the baby?” Mile s asks.

“No thanks, I’m fine,” Claire replies.

“You sure? I’m good with kids.”

“What part of restraining order don’t you understand?” Sawyer asks.

They hear some movement.

“Get behind me Claire.” Sawyer says.

Lapidus steps in. “Whoa, hey!”

“Who the hell are you?” Sawyer asks.

“Lapidus,” Miles says.

“Miles?” Lapidus replies.

“You two know each other?” Sawyer interrupts.

“You’ve got to hide man, right now.” Lapidus says.

“What?” Miles asks.

“Keame’s coming back. And if he sees you, he’ll kill all of you. Now hide now, just hide!” Lapidus says. They rush under the cover.

Keame enters with some guys.

“Where’s the chopper?”

“It’s about a quick back that way,” Lapidus says.

“Did you bring the kit?” Keame asks.

“Yeah, it’s right there. Man he looks terrible, what the hell happened?” Lapidus asks as he looks at the man they support.

“You do your job, I’ll do mine.”

Aaron makes a noise and the crew looks around.

.

“Okay, it’s getting dark, man,” Lapidus says. “We’ve got to leave now. Mr. Keamy, we got to get back to the chopper. We’ve got to get back right now, because I’ll tell you right now, I am not flying Faraday’s bearings at night. I’m not going to do it. So if you want to get back, we’ve got to leave right now, sir.”

“Fine,” Keamy says, “you lead the way.”

Camp Jack:
Juliet asks Kate to help out with the surgery.

“It’s just holding a mirror. Jack wants to watch the surgery and talk me through it.”

Kate smiles and Juliet says, “What?”

“I’m just surprised he hasn’t taken it out by himself by now.”

Juliet smiles as Jack walks out of his tent.

Juliet says, “Jack, what are you doing?”

“I don’t need a stretcher, I can walk 50 feet.”

Kate and Jack walk toward the operating tent. “So it looks like I’m going to be your nurse,” Kate says.

“Wouldn’t be the first time.” He pauses and says, “Listen, if something happens to me …”

“Shut up, Jack.”

“Fair enough.”

Flash Forward:
Jack sits outside the mental hospital before driving home. He wakes up Kate.

She asks what time it is and if he was working.

“I had to stop and get something. It just took awhile.”

“Hey, what’s wrong?”

Jack is upset. He says, “The other night, when I was reading to Aaron, you said I was a natural. Do you really, do you really think that I’m good at this?”

“Yeah. You’re good at this.”

“Will you marry me?” He pulls out a jewelry box and opens it. It’s a diamond engagement ring. Kate begins crying and says, “Yes.”

He slides the ring on her finger.

“Of course I will,” she says. “Yes.”

Camp Jack:
Juliet asks Daniel if they found everything.

Jin pulls Charlotte aside. In Korean he says, “I know you understand me.”

“What?”

“I know you speak Korean. You smiled when Sun and I talked about you. And you were listening to us at the station.”

“I’m sorry, perhaps I can get your wife to translate.”

“If you continue to lie, I’m going to hurt your friend, Daniel. I’m going to break his fingers one at a time. Do you understand that?”

Charlotte responds in Korean, “What do you want?”

“When the helicopter comes for you, you’re going to take my wife off this island.”

“What about the rest of your friends?”

“Just get her on the helicopter.”

Charlotte pauses and nods.

Inside the tent they are preparing for surgery.

Bernard says, “They found some Chloroform at the medical station, I could knock you out. Wouldn’t you rather be dreaming about something nice back home?”

“No, I’ll manage with the Lidocaine.”

Bernard gives him the shot. “Okay, now this is going to numb the area of the first incision. After that, I would like to be able to tell you you’re not going to feel a thing, but you will.”

Juliet makes the cuts. Jack says he can’t see the mirror and Kate adjusts it. Juliet begins to spread the skin and Jack starts yelling. Juliet tells Bernard to knock him out. Jack says no and begins pleading with Kate.

Juliet yells at Kate to leave and tells Bernard to knock him out. Bernard walks over with a cloth. “I’m sorry, Jack, but I agree.” He holds the cloth over Jack’s face.

Flash Forward:
Jack puts an x-ray up and speaks into a recorder. He hears a beeping sound and leaves the room. He finds a smoke detector that is beeping. He steps on a desk and removes the battery.

“Jack,” he hears. He looks over and it his father. Another doctor walks down the hall. Jack turns and his father is gone.

“You okay?” she asks.

He says he’s okay and then asks for a favor. “Can you write a script for Clonazepam?”

“For you?”

“Yeah, I’ve just got a lot going on right now, and, um, I’m a little snowed under with all my case load, and Kate and I got engaged. I’m just not sleeping very well.”

She writes on a paper and hands it to him. “You know, getting engaged is supposed to help reduce stress, not create it.”

“Yeah, you’re right.”

“You should talk to someone.”

“I’ll do that.”

“Good night.”

Later, Jack goes home and Kate is on the phone, “I can stay for an extra few minutes. Jack’s never home before eight anyway. I can stay for at least an hour.”

Kate realizes he is there and gets off the phone

“I thought you’d be in bed,” he says. “Who was that?”

“That was Noreen. She’s one of the mom’s from the park.”

“I’ve never heard you mention her before.”

“Well, now you have.” She kisses him and goes upstairs. Jack pulls out his prescription and guzzles a beer.

Camp Sawyer:
Miles, Sawyer, and Claire are asleep by a fire. Claire wakes up and realizes Aaron is missing. She sees Christian on the other side, holding Aaron.

“Dad?” she says.

Camp Jack:
Bernard exits the tent and walks up to Kate. He says it went well. “She did good. She says you can go back inside if you want to.”

Kate walks into the tent. Juliet is stitching up the wound “He didn’t lose that much blood. I got the appendix out and put everything back where it belongs, I think.”

“So he’s going to be okay?”

“He should be fine. We just have to talk him into resting.”

“Good luck with that.” Kate says.

“I’m sorry I yelled at you.”

“Don’t worry about it. You had enough going on.”

“You know, he kissed me,” Juliet says.

“What?”

“The other day when you came back from the other side of the island, Jack kissed me.”

“Oh.”

“It was nice. But it wasn’t for me, it was for him. I’m pretty sure he was trying to prove something.”

“Prove what?”

“That he doesn’t love someone else.”

“Thank you, Juliet. Thank you for saving his life.”

Kate walks out.

Juliet says to Jack, “I know you’re awake.”

He opens his eyes.

Flash Forward:
Jack is sitting in a chair. Alcohol bottles are on the table in front of him. Kate walks in and is startled to find him there.

“You’re home early. Where’s Veronica?” Kate asks.

“I sent her home. The baby’s asleep.”

“Good,” Kate says.

“Why was she here?” Jack asks.

“I’m sorry?”

“The nanny, she only works until four. I came home at six.”

“I had to run some errands, so I asked her to stay an extra couple of hours. What’s going on, Jack? Why are you home so early?”

“I went to see Hurley.”

“Today?”

“Last Friday.”

“Why didn’t you tell me? I would have gone with you.”

“Because he’s crazy, Kate. I didn’t want to upset you. Where were you today?”

“I’m going to ask you to trust me. Trust me, just leave it be.”

“Where were you?”

“Jack, don’t.”

“I heard you on the phone last night. Who were you talking to?”

“Just let it go.”

“No, no, I want to know. I want to know where you were. I want to know who you were with!”

“It doesn’t matter, Jack.”

“Tell me!”

“I was doing something for him.”

“For who?”

“For Sawyer. I made him a promise.”

Jack shakes his head. “What?”

“It doesn’t matter! It has nothing to do with us!”

“Then why won’t you tell me?”

“Because he wouldn’t want me to.”

“But he’s not here, is he? No, he made his choice. He chose to stay. I’m the one who came back. I’m the one who’s here. I’m the one who saved you.”

“Jack, you can’t do this. If you have problems, you need to figure them out. Because I can’t have you like this around my son!”

“Your son? You’re not even related to him!”

Aaron walks out and Kate goes to him and hugs him.

Camp Sawyer:
Sawyer wakes up. Miles is by the far. Sawyer realizes Claire is gone. “Where’s Claire, ladies room?”

“Nope. She just walked off into the jungle.”

“When?”

“The middle of the night. She just got up and left.”

“And you let her go alone?”

“She wasn’t alone.”

“Well who was she with?”

“She called him Dad. I’d have followed them, but I have a restraining order.”

Aaron cries. Sawyer runs off and finds Aaron. He picks him and looks around. “Claire!” he yells.
