There are several unanswered questions in this episode: What is the device, strapped to Keamy’s arm? Why is Ben no longer the chosen one and who was the Others’ leader before him? How Richard get to the mainland etc.

i suppose that richard wanted locke to choose the knife, and he also chose the gunpowder, or whatever it was, which surrounds jacobs cabin.
when richard saw that locke chose the knife, he realise locke was special, and decided to leave without an explanation, so that they could recruit john at a later age, which they did.
i suppose there is a connection between locke and ben. both were born prematurley, and their mothers are both called emily..

I think Richard looked pretty angry when Locke chose the knife… which makes me think that maybe it wasn’t a good thing!!

The question about Richard getting to the mainland. All of the others have been able to get off the Island as they please. Richard went to Poretland to talk to Juliet too. They have a submaraine. Submarines aren’t a new invention. Locke wasn’t supposed to choose the knife. It’s why he wasn’t able to go with Richard, he wasn’t ready yet. I think the leader before Ben was Richard, Richard was the one who recruited Ben. Also both fathers were hateful to each. Both abanonded by their fathers. They wanted to recruit Ben then, it’s why he was angry beause Locke wasn’t ready yet.
