LOST: Best Television Series at 2009 Saturn Awards

June 25, 2009 by Robin Parrish

Our favorite show was awarded “Best Television Series” at the Saturn Awards last night, in what one assumes could only have been a narrow victory over Battlestar Galactica’s final season.

See the full list here, which includes details about top winners The Dark Knight, Iron Man, and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

The Saturn Awards are annually handed out by the Academy of Science-Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films to the best genre films and television presentations of the year. Winners are voted upon by members of the Academy.

68th Annual George Foster Peabody Awards

Lost has been recognized as one of 36 winners in the 68th Annual Peabody Awards at a live ceremony on Monday. On hand to receive the award were executive producer Damon Lindelof and actor Michael Emerson (Benjamin Linus). Emerson is pictured above. About Lost, the Peabody Awards said:

Breezily mixing metaphysics, quantum physics, romance, and cliffhanger action, the genre-bending series about a group of air-crash survivors on a mysterious island has rewritten the rules of television fiction.

Lost won alongside such honorees as Entourage, Breaking Bad, HBO’s John Adams miniseries, NBC’s coverage of the Beijing Olympics, and more. See the complete list here. The prestigious Peabody Awards recognize excellence in electronic media.

Season 4’s “The Constant” has been nominated for a 2009 Hugo Award, one of the most prestigious awards in all of science fiction. The Hugo Awards are voted on by fans, or more specifically members of the World Science Fiction Society.

The Awards will be announced in early August at the World Science Fiction Convention in Montreal.

LOST leads Saturn Awards TV nominations

March 10, 2009 by Robin Parrish

The nominees for the 35th Annual Saturn Awards have been announced, and Lost topped the list of nominations in the television categories. Lost was honored with eleven nominations (the next highest nominee was Heroes with six nods) in the following categories:

  • Best Network Television Series
  • Best Actor in Television - Matthew Fox (Jack Shephard)
  • Best Actress in Television - Evangeline Lilly (Kate Austen)
  • Best Supporting Actor in Television - Henry Ian Cusick (Desmond Hume), Michael Emerson (Benjamin Linus), and Josh Holloway (James “Sawyer” Ford)
  • Best Supporting Actress in Television - Yunjin Kim (Sun Kwon) and Elizabeth Mitchell (Juliet Burke)
  • Best Guest Starring Roles in a Television Series - Alan Dale (Charles Widmore), Kevin Durand (Martin Keamy), and Sonya Walger (Penny Widmore)
  • Best Television Series Release on DVD - Lost: The Complete Fourth Season

The Saturn Awards are presented by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror Films to honor the best in those three genres — which are so often overlooked by awarding bodies like the Oscars and Emmys. Saturn Awards are voted on by members of the aforementioned Academy, and presented at an awards ceremony. This year’s ceremony is set for June 25th at a location yet to be determined.

Lost nominated for American Cinema Editors award

January 13, 2009 by Robin Parrish

Continuing the many accolades Lost has received for Season 4, particularly from Hollywood’s various guilds (the Writer’s Guild, Producer’s Guild, and Director’s Guild have all nominated the show), the 3-hour season finale, “There’s No Place Like Home,” has been nominated for an American Cinema Editors award, which is known as the “Eddie.” The category is “Best Edited Motion Picture for Commercial Television,” which I suppose is A.C.E.’s way of saying “TV episode that’s more than one hour long.”

Lost’s editor nominees are Henk Van Eeghen, Robert Florio, Mark J. Goldman, and Stephen Semel. The show is up against 24: Redemption and The Librarian: Curse of the Judas Chalice, and as much as I love 24, I should think Lost would have this one in the bag. We’ll find out when the awards are presented at a non-televised event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on February 15th.

Lost nominated for Director’s Guild Award

January 12, 2009 by Robin Parrish

The Director’s Guild of America has announced its nominations for outstanding direction in television and film. Lost made the cut for the Season 4 fan-favorite episode, “The Constant,” and its director Jack Bender. Bender has directed 25 episodes of the series so far, and he’s already helmed two more from the upcoming Season 5 (5.02, “The Lie,” and 5.06, “The Life and Times of Jeremy Bentham”).

I wouldn’t get my hopes up too high for a win on this one; “The Constant” is up against eps of critical darlings The Wire and In Treatment, and not one but two nominated episodes of Mad Men. Still, it’s nice to see the show counted among such high quality work!

LOST nominated by Producers Guild of America

January 6, 2009 by Robin Parrish

The Producers Guild of America has nominated Lost and its entire roster of producers for “Producer of the Year Award in Episodic Television-Drama.” Chief among the nominees are of course Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse; also listed are Jack Bender, Drew Goddard, Jean Higgins, Edward Kitsis & Adam Horowitz, Liz Sarnoff, Stephen Williams, and Ra’uf Glasglow.

Lost is nominated alongside Boston Legal, Damages, Dexter, and Mad Men. The awards will be handed out at an untelevised event on Saturday, January 24th, at the Hollywood Palladium.

Lost among EW’s faves for 2008

December 23, 2008 by Robin Parrish

Entertainment Weekly’s TV critic Ken Tucker has named Lost the #5 best TV show of 2008. In particular, he praises the flashforwards introduced in Season 4, the “new peak of emotional intensity” the show achieved this year, and newly introduced characters like Jeff Fahey’s Frank Lapidus.

And since I know you’re wondering what 4 titles could have possibly topped our favorite show, Tucker’s list named The Colbert Report at #1, The Wire at #2, 30 Rock at #3, and The Shield at #4. Lost got no love in the “Best TV on DVD” category, despite a universally-lauded stellar Season 4 DVD release. Nor was “The Constant” mentioned anywhere in EW’s “Favorite Episodes” list.

But then, we really shouldn’t expect too much from a magazine that included the Jonas Brothers among its favorite music releases of the year. (Insert tweener-tight-pants punchline here.)

Lost is TV Guide’s #2 best TV of 2008

December 16, 2008 by Robin Parrish

This week’s newsstand edition of TV Guide features the mag’s picks for “The Best of 2008.” (The feature is not yet available online.) Popular critic Matt Roush includes his own Top 10 list for the year, and Lost is sitting pretty at #2, behind Mad Men. Here’s an excerpt:

TV’s greatest escape was trippier than ever in its comeback fourth season, a thrill ride of heart-wrenching flashbacks and flash-forwards — sometimes within the same episode — that had us on the edge of our seats while reaching for our tissues as Sun lost Jin, Desmond found Penny, and Jack and Kate left Sawyer behind. And the island? Vanished into thin air! Can’t wait to see them try to top that. ABC’s Lost is my “constant.”
