LOST’s Terry O’Quinn on John Locke

March 4, 2009 by Robin Parrish

The LA Times has published a great interview with John Locke himself, actor Terry O’Quinn. O’Quinn is once again garnering lots of press and praise, thanks to his fearless acting in last week’s “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham.” Regarding the “new Locke” that’s just been resurrected, he says:

It’s interesting that I find post-death Locke up to this point much more relaxed and confident. I guess dying does that to you. I don’t think he’s too worried anymore. I think he might believe that he has the answers he’s been looking for… It wouldn’t surprise me if somehow Ben talked his way out of [murdering Locke]. At the moment, what we’ve shot to this point, I think Locke has a pretty strong upper hand.

Producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse add their $.02 on the importance of Locke to the overall story. Cuse says, “How far he goes next year, what his role is, what the final destination of that character is, we just don’t want to say because we feel it will spoil the journey of the show next season.”

There’s lots more. Hit the link for the full interview.

Terry O’Quinn on Locke and Lost

September 6, 2008 by Nikki Katz

terry-oquinn-lost-nc.jpg Terry O’Quinn likes everything about his character, Locke. Everything! “I do, I’m not being faecitious,” O’Quinn tells 01 Men. “I like playing him, and I like his flaws, I think it’s all his weaknesses that make him interesting.” O’Quinn says that Locke is the un-Jack and is unstable. But if he were to meet Locke on the street O’Quinn says he’s not sure if would like Locke or if he would be frightened of him.

It’s a good thing he likes playing Locke, because O’Quinn says that he has to love what he’s doing. “I don’t know if you have to love your character or not, but you certainly have to understand him, and you have to know why he makes the choices that he makes.” O’Quinn says that half the actor’s job is understanding the character and the psychology of the role. The other half of an actor’s job is making the character interesting for others to watch.

When it comes to relating to Locke, O’Quinn says that he has the same views on faith. “When they say he’s a man of faith, I think he’s a man who desperately wants to have faith, in something. I think, y’know, his whole life before the island, he had no faith in anything, because everything was a disappointment: his family – no family, no friends, no recognition and no place in the world.”

So how does Terry keep up with all the places and time frames on the Island? “I only have to keep track of John Locke,” Terry O’Quinn says. “I only have to know what he knows. In fact, the more difficult challenge is not paying attention to the things I am not supposed to know. John Locke doesn’t have to keep track of everything, because he only knows what he knows.

Terry O’Quinn Says Locke to Push the Envelope

February 24, 2008 by Nikki Katz

Terry O’Quinn says get ready for his character to really push the envelope.

O’Quinn recently sat down with The Associated Press to discuss his character… Locke is “trying to find out who these people are, why they’re there, what they want, because he knows it’s not to rescue them and Ben has said that he has someone on their boat and he’s going to try to find out who that is and what exactly is going on. He believes now that his purpose is to protect this place. That it has a soul, that it’s kind of a being and he’s its agent.”

But is Locke going insane?

“The question is whether he’s gone over the edge or where is the edge or how far is he going to go,” O’Quinn says. “Whether he’s being misled and where he’s being led and whether he’s going to have the good sense to stop when he gets to the right place. I don’t know.”

O’Quinn likes playing this side of Locke more than the button-pushing fanatic.

“I like the present situation somewhat more. Although in the next few episodes people are about to see he sort of stalls again. But he has this - it seems to be his pattern. He finds something, it activates him, he goes until he hits a roadblock and he stalls and he waits for something to happen, he gets frustrated, he gets angry and then something happens and he runs along for a while. They’ve always kept it interesting - well, sometimes not, sometimes frustrating - but that’s what happens with the character.”

O’Quinn is not one to sit and take what the writers throw at him. He had a problem at the end of Season 3!

“At the end of Season 3 Locke throws a knife into Naomi’s back and I said, ‘This really hurts me, It’s so not typical and it’s so out of character and it seemed gratuitous.’ I made the biggest stink I ever made with (executive producers) Damon Lindelhof and Carlton Cuse and they said, ‘Look, Locke believes he was doing the right thing. His life was saved, he’s been told, he’s been instructed. He believes that this is the most dangerous person in the world right now and he does what he does. Do it.’ I said, ‘Well, you know, if I stab her in the back couldn’t I at least shoot Jack in the knee or something?’”
