LOST’s Terry O’Quinn on John Locke

March 4, 2009 by Robin Parrish

The LA Times has published a great interview with John Locke himself, actor Terry O’Quinn. O’Quinn is once again garnering lots of press and praise, thanks to his fearless acting in last week’s “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham.” Regarding the “new Locke” that’s just been resurrected, he says:

It’s interesting that I find post-death Locke up to this point much more relaxed and confident. I guess dying does that to you. I don’t think he’s too worried anymore. I think he might believe that he has the answers he’s been looking for… It wouldn’t surprise me if somehow Ben talked his way out of [murdering Locke]. At the moment, what we’ve shot to this point, I think Locke has a pretty strong upper hand.

Producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse add their $.02 on the importance of Locke to the overall story. Cuse says, “How far he goes next year, what his role is, what the final destination of that character is, we just don’t want to say because we feel it will spoil the journey of the show next season.”

There’s lots more. Hit the link for the full interview.

Friday Poll: 2/13/09

February 13, 2009 by Robin Parrish

So what do you think happened when Locke turned the frozen wheel at the end of 5.05 “This Place Is Death”? Was it just the first step in a process needed to stabilize the island, or did he stop all this time-jumping for good?

Lost Season 5 billboards

January 18, 2009 by Robin Parrish

The ODI has turned up three billboards in Europe — showcasing Sayid, Hurley, and Locke — and promoting Season 5’s premier. Each one has a different tagline that refers to current happenings with that character, and I predict at least two of them will make you smile.

I’d love to show them to you here, but I’m not going to swipe them from The ODI cause that ain’t cool. So view them here and here.

Speed Paintings of LOST’s Locke & Sawyer

January 7, 2009 by Robin Parrish

For your viewing pleasure today, I present to you these amazing (and surprisingly entertaining) videos depicting artist Nico di Mattia’s digital paintings. di Mattia has done digital portraits of many popular TV characters, including Lost’s Sawyer and John Locke, which you can watch below. He claims that these portraits took about three hours to create, but the videos show them in just 4 to 5 minutes. It’s pretty cool.

John Locke:

Sawyer:

More of his work is available to view at his website. I particularly like his Optimus Prime, but then, I’m a geek, so of course I do.

New Season 5 promotional pictures

December 8, 2008 by Robin Parrish

Lyly Ford Blog turned up ten new promotional pictures for Season Five. The pics are individual profile shots that match the cast shots from the Season Five poster (that “Destiny Calls” one you’ve probably seen a dozen times by now), which were obviously Photoshopped together to create the poster. Here’s your chance to see each character image from that poster solo, if that strikes your fancy. Note that these are not official ABC images, but instead appear to be the cut-and-paste (but still very professional looking) concoction of a TV network in Brazil, using the Destiny Calls poster as source material. But they still turn up a few interesting tidbits…

Lindelof hints at future of Jack vs. Locke

December 5, 2008 by Robin Parrish

lost_11_105055_0223_small.jpg In another excerpt from that much-discussed roundtable interview with series producers Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse (this one from Sci Fi Wire), Lindelof points to the Jack and Locke “greenhouse scene” in the season finale as the most pivotal moment of Season 4. He says:

…the ramifications of Locke telling Jack — once again — that he’s not supposed to leave the island, but if he does, he must LIE about everything that happens… is essentially what kicks off the entire story of the Oceanic Six. We think it’s really cool that it was actually Locke’s idea, even though Jack doesn’t present it that way. And now that Jack is standing over Locke’s coffin, the relationship between these two men becomes really central to the endgame of our story.

In essence, he’s saying that the greenhouse scene is crucial to what’s coming (and I read that to mean particularly in Season 6). They’ve been telling us since around Season 2 that the Jack/Locke, science/faith dynamic would be absolutely central to the show, so it’s nice to see that they intend to pay this off as the story reaches its climax.

Also, about the new storytelling structure that will be utilized in Season 5, Lindelof dropped this little tidbit:

The cool thing about Season 5 is that it takes a little while for your brain to fully absorb how the story is unfolding, but hopefully, once it does, you’ll realize we’re trying something new yet again.

It sounds like what we’re going to see this year is not flashbacks or flashforwards, but something… else. Can’t wait to see what it is! What do you think it will be?

Carlton Cuse “Locke’s Story is Not Over”

June 21, 2008 by Nikki Katz

lost-terry-oquinn-locke-NC.jpgCarlton Cuse was at a TV and Film Forum in China to discuss Lost and to answer some questions about the industry. While there he mentioned some bits about Lost and what is coming in Lost Season 5.

  1. Jack v Locke (Science v. Faith)
One of the fundamental themes of Lost. In Season 5 Jack will become more a Man of Faith and Locke will become more a Man of Science. Locke believes his destiny is tied to this island. This will be a story line that will be explored in the upcoming seasons.
  2. Locke and the Others.
Locke’s story will be explained. It will also be showed what Locke’s destiny is now that he is the Island’s leader. He has committed his destiny to this island and thinks that it will lead him to enlightenment. Eventually he will see if he is right or not.
  3. Locke’s Story is Not Over.
There is a possibility of Locke will be resurrected, a la Jesus Christ.

Who is Jeremy Bentham

May 30, 2008 by Nikki Katz

jeremy-bentham.jpgWell in Lost terms, Jeremy Bentham is a pseudonym for John Locke. But in real life, Jeremy Bentham was a philosopher and social reformer.

Bentham, born in 1748 and deceased in 1832, was one of the originators of Utilitarianism. Bentham argued for a variety of freedoms - including freedom of expression, women’s rights, the end of slavery, abolishing physical punishment, and the right to divorce.

Upon his death, Bentham wanted his body to be preserved and displayed. His body was dissected in a school of anatomy and stored in a wooden box, his “auto-icon”. His organs were removed and his head was replaced by a wax one, whch now is kept in a safe at the College after multiple thefts.

Why Is Locke off the Island?

May 30, 2008 by Nikki Katz

lost-terry-oquinn-locke-NC.jpgWith the Lost Season 4 Finale shocker of an ending, I can’t get the image of Locke in a coffin out of my head! But the question still stands .. why in the world was Locke OFF the island? Could it be that he needed to move the island himself or was he looking for the Oceanic Six to bring them back? Vote in our poll below.
