Daniel Dae Kim Pleads No Contest to Drunk Driving

September 13, 2008 by Nikki Katz

A&E's HD Screening & Party For

Daniel Dae Kim pleaded no contest earlier this week to drunken driving charges. He was then ordered to pay a $500 fine, $212 in court fees and he has to perform 72 hours of community service. He also had his driver’s licensed revoked for six months and had to undergo a drug-and-alcohol assessment.

Kim was arrested last October when a police officer saw him driving erratically in Honolulu. He was tested and his blood alcohol content was 0.168.

During his court date, the judge scolded Kim. “You need to understand that 0.168 is more that double the legal limit. It means you were seriously impaired,” Judge Cardwell said. “And it just cannot happen again. It’s simply too dangerous.

Believe me, sir, I do,” Kim replied.

After the hearing Kim said that he is grateful and relieved that the matter has been resolved. “It’s been a pretty difficult time for my family and me. But I’m glad I had a chance to take responsibility for my mistake.

Speculation has risen that Kim’s character on Lost (Jin) will remain dead after the drunk driving incident - as two other characters have been killed off after similar arrests. The roles played by Michelle Rodriguez and Cynthia Watros were eliminated in 2005 after they also pleaded guilty to drunken driving.

Daniel Dae Kim Okay with Jin’s Fate

May 9, 2008 by Nikki Katz

daniel-dae-kim-lost-nc.jpgDaniel Dae Kim recently told SciFi Wire that he is okay with his character’s fate, whatever it may be…

We all know that in one of Sun’s flash-forwards we see a gravesite for Jin, but we don’t know exactly what happens. Neither does Daniel, but he’s thankful for the experience, no matter what happens.

You know, if he doesn’t make it, it’s been a great ride,” Daniel. “It’s been an incredible opportunity. If he does make it, it means the roller-coaster ride continues. Either way, it’s a win-win.

Daniel also revealed that he only knows a bit about what’s coming up. “Very broad, general strokes.

Daniel is optimistic about future storylines involving Jin, regardless of whether or not he dies. “The writers–regardless of whether we’re ready to say goodbye to it or not–the writers have such a way of continuing to delve into the characters,” he said. “So there’s always seem to be more story to tell.

Daniel Dae Kim in Andromeda Strain

April 30, 2008 by Nikki Katz

Daniel Dae Kim is set to star in the two day, four hour mini-series, the Andromeda Strain, based on the novel by Michael Crichton! Daniel Dae plays “Dr. Tsi Chou,” microbiologist who once served as the premiere biological weapons designer for the Chinese government and now is a U.S.-based bio-terrorism consultant.

Daniel Dae stars along with Benjamin Bratt, Eric McCormack, Ricky Schroder, Andre Braugher, Christa Miller, Daniel Dae Kim and Viola Davis.

According to SFUniverse, in the story, a U.S. military satellite crashes in a small town and unleashes a deadly plague killing all but two survivors. As the military quarantines the area, a team of highly specialized scientists is assembled to find a cure to the pathogen, code-named “Andromeda,” and a reporter investigates a government conspiracy only to discover that what he is chasing wants him silenced.

Daniel Dae Kim, Evangeline Lilly and Grant Bowler chat to TV WEEK

April 9, 2008 by Nikki Katz

Lost’s Daniel Dae Kim, Evangeline Lilly and Grant Bowler recently chatted to TV WEEK about the exciting twists of the latest season…

Daniel Dae Kim

Jin’s starting to speak more English. Are you thinking, “Yay! At last I can interact with more people on the island”?
Exactly.

Will it affect upcoming storylines?
I don’t know. I mean, we’ll see. As you know, each episode takes place over a day and a half. So even though we’ve been on air for four years, it’s only been a few months on the island. So we’ll see how much of a quick learner he is. But I keep having this fantasy that one day Jin will have a flashback or flash-forward and he’ll be able to speak the same language as everyone else. Maybe they’ll all speak Korean? But I don’t think that’s going to happen.

Where do you stand on the “Is Locke good or bad?” divide?
I generally don’t ask those questions because I don’t think anyone is all good or all bad. Everyone is driven by their own motivations. Whatever Locke does, he feels like he’s doing the right thing. When he throws the knife into the back of Naomi, he doesn’t feel like he’s a villain — he genuinely believes that he’s saving the island. I think that’s one of the good things about this show too — people can take sides and choose.

In an ideal world, how would you like to see the show end?
Well, I used to think I would love to see everyone happily off the island, but I don’t think people can escape their problems just by going back to civilisation. So I wouldn’t be surprised if the series ended on the island. But what I expect to see and what I hope to see, I’m not quite sure.

Daniel Dae Kim Pleades Not Guilty

November 26, 2007 by Nikki Katz

Daniel Dae Kim entered in an initial plea of “not guilty” to a drunken driving charge. This was after his arrest on October 25th. His blood alcohol level was 0.168 which is more than twice the legal limit.

Kim’s attorney, Patrick McPherson, said that the not guilty plea is more of a legal formality and no defense strategy has been planned. He also said that Kim is sorry for his actions.

“He made an apology to the state, the people of Hawaii and his fans,” McPherson said outside the courtroom. “He pleaded not guilty and requested a trial date.”

Kim did not appear at the arraignment in District Court. His trial was set for Feb. 15.

Lost - Daniel Dae Kim Blog Update

November 13, 2007 by Nikki Katz

Daniel Dae Kim just posted a new blog update sending thanks for the messages regarding his DUI and also giving us a little update about Season 4 filming and the schedule of LOST based on the strike.

DDK Blog 11/12/07

SO MUCH TO TELL YOU…

First of all, thanks from the bottom of my heart for all your recent messages. Negative or positive, I read them all, and they really helped me get through one of the toughest weeks of my life. Though there’s still a long way to go, I’ve already learned some invaluable lessons, and I’m doing my best to pick myself off the floor. The silver lining in all this is that in the end, I hope this experience helps make me a better man.

On to happier news though…

Fans of the show will be happy to know that we’re wrapping up filming on episode seven, which happens to be a Sun/Jin episode, called “Ji Yeon.” Given the turmoil of the past few weeks, it’s been great to be able to throw my focus back on my work, and especially on such a great episode. I hope you like it. It should air in March sometime, and if the current strike schedule holds, it will be our second to last episode before we take our unplanned hiatus.

For those of you who don’t know, it was just announced that LOST will come back in February as planned, and we’ll run all of the episodes we’ll have finished, which at the moment, looks to be a total of eight. After that though, we’ll be dependent on the strike coming to an end. Please keep your fingers crossed that it will happen soon. The welfare of so many people -and families- are at stake. Many of you have asked me where I stand on the issue, and without getting too political, just let me say that though it’s very complicated, I stand behind the writers and what they’re trying to achieve. They are as responsible for a show’s success as much as anyone -if not more so- and their livelihoods in the face of a rapidly changing entertainment landscape deserve to be protected.

One last thing before I go. I just went back to my college to meet and talk with some of the students, and while I was there, the college theater production happened to be running. It was a play written in 1938 by Gertrude Stein called “Dr. Faustus Lights the Lights.” It also happened to be directed by my former professor, so I went back to see it. I’m so glad I did. Eerie, haunting, and so visually inventive, I found it achingly beautiful. Just a nice reminder that inspiration comes from anywhere and everywhere, and sometimes, a little dip back into the wellspring is all you need to feel refreshed.

Hope you’re having a good November. Cheers, everyone.
