Prior to the Crash:
Ben was born prematurely while his father and mother were hiking in a forest in Oregon. His mother died during labor and her last words were to name the child, “Benjamin.”
Ben came to the island as a boy when his father, Roger, got a job working for Dharma. Ben’s father was an alcoholic who paid hardly any attention to Ben while he was a child, often forgetting his birthday.
Ben saw the Hostiles attack Dharma and that night he saw his mother outside.
Ben met another child, Annie, on the island. Annie became his friend and gave him a birthday present, a doll carved to be her. She also carved a doll to represent Ben. She kept the Ben doll and Ben kept the Annie doll. That night Ben wet home where his father was passed out on the couch. Roger woke and began saying that Ben killed his mother on his birthday. Ben ran off to the fence. His mother was there again but she told him it was not time yet.
Later Ben ran away from home and met Richard Alpert. After Ben said he wanted to join the Hostiles, Richard told him that it might be possible, but he had to be patient.
