LOST 5.11 “Whatever Happened, Happened” recap
April 1, 2009 by Robin Parrish

“Whatever Happened, Happened” was a deceptively big episode of Lost. What from the outside looked like a character piece focusing on Kate, turned out to be an episode of tremendous mythological significance to the show’s ongoing storyline. And it held some pretty big answers as well, particularly in the last 15 minutes.

“Out,” the girl says.
“With who? Him?”
“Yes, and you can’t stop me. I’m in love.”
“He’s twice your age, Emily.”
“So what, Mom, are you jealous?” Emily grabs her purse and sweater and walks out.
“Emily, wait a minute.”

Camp Jack:
Jack is asleep…
“Jack,” Juliet says as she walks into the room. “Jack. Jack.”
She slowly comes into focus.
“Jack, I need you to wake up. Jack. Can you hear me. You okay?”
“What happened?” he asks.
“Come on, I just want to know why,” we hear Bernard. “I want the truth!”
“I don’t know, that is the truth. I’m telling you. I don’t know why, but there’s no signal now,” Daniel says.
“Signal, there was a signal when you called them last night. So so, what? They’re just ignoring us?” Bernard continues.
“How are we supposed to know why they’re not answering. In case you haven’t noticed, we’re not on the bloody boat, are we?”
“Hey, just watch your tone Red,” Rose says.
“Hey, everyone just needs to calm down, okay,” Jack says as he steps up.
“Jack, these people are lying to us,” Bernard replies.
“I know they are lying,” Jack says.. I know it. Sooner or later their people will come back for them. And when they do, we’ll be waiting for them.”
“Unless they run off again,” Sun replies.
“Listen to me,” Jack says.
“Jack, are you all right?” Rose asks.

Camp Jack
Kate is sitting on the shore. Jack passes. They smile and wave at each other before Jack goes into a shelter.
Jack pops a couple of pills.
“Got a prescription for that?” Kate asks as she walks in.
“Yeah, I wrote it myself,” Jack says.
“You look terrible,” Kate says. “What are those?”
“Antibiotics. I’ve just got a stomach bug.”
“Have some crackers. Crackers always make me feel better,” Kate replies. She pauses. “Why aren’t they back from the boat yet, Jack?”
“Sayid said the engine was down. My guess is they’re trying to fix it. Wondering why the hell they can’t get in touch with us.”
“And you’re not worried…” Kate says.
“My gut says we’re getting off this island.”
“I thought your gut was sick?” Kate says.
“Help, I need some help down here,” Bernard yells. Jack and Kate run down to the shore.
Everyone works to pull a body out of the ocean.
They carry the body onto the beach. Jack turns him over. His throat is slit. Charlotte and Daniel look at each other. Jack asks if they know him.
Daniel says, “He was on our boat. He’s the doctor.”

Recap
The camera pans in on a room of people … Aaron, Claire, Rousseau, Alex, Karl, Hurley, Ben, Sawyer …
Miles is led into the room by Locke. Miles’ hands are tied in front of him.
“Thank you all for your patience,” Locke says. “I know it’s taken me a few days to figure out our next move, but I didn’t want to do anything until I knew more about our situation. You deserve to know everything that I do. So, no more secrets.
“As you all know, Miles here, and three of his people, came to the island about a week ago. So I brought him up from the boat house to share with us exactly why they are here.”
“We’re here for him,” Miles says, pointing to Ben.
“Uh, we kinda like, knew that forever ago,” Hurley says.
“Alright then, problem solved. How soon do we turn him over?” Sawyer asks.
“We can’t turn him over,” Locke replies.
“And why the hell not?” Sawyer asks.
“Because once they have me, their orders are to kill everyone else on the island,” Ben says.

On the Freighter:
Lapidus walks across the deck of the freighter while holding a bag. “Lapidus,” Keamy says as he walks toward him. “You ready?”
“I’ll be up,” Lapidus says.
“Don’t be late, Lapidus.”
Lapidus walks down a hallway. A woman sits outside a door, reading a book.
“Regina,” he says. She looks startled. “Lapidus, I didn’t hear you.”
“Sorry. Didn’t mean to spook you. The captain wanted me to bring these guys some grub.”
“Okay,” she says.
“You know, your book’s upside down,” Lapidus continues.
Lapidus opens the door and goes into Sayid and Desmond’s room. He asks Desmond how he is feeling.
“Much better, thanks,” Desmond says.
“Why are we being held captive?” Sayid asks. “We had nothing to do with Minkowski’s death.”
“This has nothing to do with Minkowski,” Lapidus says. He says the captain wasn’t very happy that they busted out of sick bay
“We didn’t bust out. The door was left open. We assumed it was you,” Sayid says.
“Why the hell would I do that?” Lapidus asks. He dumps some canned food out of his bag onto the bed.
Sayid picks one up. “Lima beans?”
“Sorry, we had a little problem in the kitchen. Just stay put, alright?” Lapidus turns to leave.
“I still want to talk to the captain,” Sayid says.
“No you don’t,” Lapidus says. He knocks on the door, “Regina.”

Flashback:
Juliet is raking a zen rock garden. She looks around the room. A woman enters. Her name is Harper and she’s a therapist. “How about we call it talking, instead of therapy,” she says. “So you’ve been here a week.” And she asks what her least favorite part thus far. “I don’t like being treated like a celebrity,” Juliet says. Harper says that she is not a celebrity. And soon enough she’ll feel like the rest of them.
Tom bursts in and says that they need the doctor. “It was nice meeting you, Juliet. Welcome to the island.”
Tom leads Juliet to her house. Ben welcomes her with flowers. Juliet can’t believe that the entire house is just for her. “Two bedrooms, two baths, washer, dryer …” Juliet says that he shouldn’t have gone to all the trouble. She’s only going to be there for six months.
On the Island:
Sun helps Juliet set up her tent but asks why she’s going to all this trouble if they are about to leave the island. “I still need somewhere to sleep tonight, right?” she replies.
Jack asks where Charlotte and Faraday are. All their stuff is gone. Jin steps up and says that he saw them going off into the jungle. “Why didn’t he say anything?” Jack asks. Jin responds that Jack said they were friends.
“Aren’t they?” Sun asks.

On the Island:
The helicopter is flying over the ocean. Lapidus rechecks the coordinates. Sayid asks what it is and Lapidus replies that it is a cheat sheet. The helicopter flies through some clouds, straight into the thunderhead. Lapidus tells Sayid to sit back and let him do his job. Desmond keeps looking at a picture of he and Penny. The helicopter tilts and swerves as it encounters turbulence. Rain pounds on.
Off the Island:
Desmond wakes up in a barrack. He seems disoriented. A captain walks through. “I’m sorry sir, I was having a dream sir,” Desmond says. He says that he was in a helicopter, there was a storm, and he doesn’t remember the rest. “At least it was a bloody military dream,” the captain replies. Desmond goes outside and begins doing crunches. He immediately finds himself back in the helicopter.
On the Island:
“Who are you?” Desmond yells at Sayid. “How do you know my name?”
Jack asks Charlotte why they haven’t heard from the helicopter. “What makes you think I know anything?” Charlotte asks. Juliet wonders why she’s not worried. She and Charlotte exchange some uncomfortable words. “Maybe we should just tell them,” Read more

Recap
On the Island:
Locke makes breakfast and puts together a tray, with a book. He opens the door and goes down into a cellar of sorts. Walks down the hall and unlocks a padlock. Opens the door and hands the tray to Ben. “These are the last two eggs,” he says. Ben doesn’t seem very appreciate of the book. “Why did you move me from the rec room down here?” he asks. Ben then asks where Locke is keeping his other prisoner, Miles is it?
Locke asks Ben in turn, about his contact on the ship. Ben says that he feels for him, that he keeps hitting dead ends – can’t find the cabin, can’t contact Jacob, and now he’s even asking him for help. Ben says it’s just like old times, but he is locked in a different room, and Locke is more lost than he’s ever been.
“Done with breakfast?” Locke asks as he takes the tray and locks the door. He then throws the tray against the wall and storms out of the house.
Kate watches him walk by. She sits on a porch with Claire and Aaron as Sawyer walks up and comments on the coffee. It’s a cute little suburb! Sawyer says he found some clothes about Kate’s size.
“I’m not moving in with you James,” Kate says. “Then why did you stay?” Sawyer asks. Kate says it’s none of her business. She says she’s not spying for Jack but she doesn’t trust Sawyer. She then tells him to go home.
